The Indian Army is likely to project requirement for about 300 Light Tanks for high altitude areas. To this extent, Russia has recently offered 18-ton Sprut Light Tank which has commonality of ammunition with T-90 and T-72 Tanks used by Indian Army. Also, indigenous effort has been taken up too with DRDO and L&T having teamed up for a 35-ton Tank based on the Army’s in-service K9 ‘Vajra’ 155 mm self-propelled howitzer or with 105 mm Gun can allow weight reduction. Previously, in 2009, the Army had issued a Request for Information (RFI) for 200 wheeled and 100 tracked Light Weight Tanks. Initially, a regiment strength of Light Tank may be imported while the rest is likely to be met indigenously especially if the DRDO-L&T project fructifies.
