The Defence Ministry has signed an estimated Rs 2580 Crores deal to manufacture indigenous Pinaka multi barrel rocket launchers for the Indian Army. The contract has been awarded to private sector companies Larsen & Tourbo (L&T) and Tata Aerospace and Defence, giving a major boost to the private industry. Also, a significant portion of work has been awarded to public sector unit BEML which supplies the trucks for the rockets.
Out of the six new regiments ordered, L&T has been awarded the contract to manufacture four while the balance two will be manufactured by Tata Aerospace and Defence; while BEML has been awarded to supply 330 high mobility vehicles for Pinaka regiments worth Rs 842 Crores. The regiments that have been ordered comprise of 114 Launchers with Automated Gun Aiming & Positioning System, 45 Command Posts and 330 Vehicles. The induction of these Six Pinaka Regiments is planned to be completed by 2024 and will most likely be operationalised along the northern and eastern borders.
