Indian Air Force (IAF), India is looking out for leasing of at least two mid-air refuelers or tankers and negotiations are on with Boeing which has offered KC-46 tanker and Airbus which has offered the A330 multi-role tanker transport (MRTT) aircraft. This is the second major leasing proposal of defence equipment by the Indian Armed Forces under the new provision of DAP2020. The first one being the leasing of two Sea Guardian drones from US firm General Atomics for the Indian Navy.
As of now the talks with both the companies has begun and a decision in this regard is expected soon. Currently, the refueler fleet of the IAF comprises of six Russian IIyushin-78 tankers which were inducted in 2003 and are facing various maintenance and serviceability issues.
