Larsen and Toubro (L&T) recently completed the delivery of the last 100th number of K9 Vajra 155mm/52 caliber Tracked Self-Propelled Howitzer to the Indian Army. All the delivering has been ahead of the scheduled time. However, with this last delivery of the howitzer, the L&T’s Hazira Manufacturing Complex may run dry, forcing a possible suspending of the facility. To avoid this, at present, L&T is in talks with DRDO to possibly convert the Tracked Self-Propelled Howitzer into a light or medium-weight tank that could be used in mountain regions like Ladakh.
Notably, L&T had in 2017 won the Rs 4,500 Crores contract to supply 100 units of K9 Vajra under the ‘Make in India’ initiative for which they had signed a transfer of technology contract with South Korean company, Hanwha Corporation.
