India-French missile development JV in trouble

The proposal to co-develop Short Range Air Defence Missiles under Maitri programme worth around Rs 30,000 crore between India and France is most likely to get shelved as the Indian Air Force (IAF) recently indicated that its requirement of Short Range Missiles can be met by DRDO developed Akash air defence missile system alone.  The IAF has already placed orders for eight squadrons of the Akash surface-to-air missile and it would require to place orders for another 25 squadrons of the weapon systems to meet its complete requirement of air defence missiles of this range. As of now, the development trials of the indigenously developed Akash  Air Defence  Missile  system  have  been completed successfully recently.
