India’s indigenous submarines program

The Indian Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the proposal to indigenously build six conventional diesel electric submarines. Further, the DAC has also approved the constitution of a 'Core Committee' to identify suitable Indian shipyards to bid for construction of six submarines.  The cost of the project is Rs.18798 crore (2005 cost) and the Acceptance of Necessity (AON) acoorded. However, the final cost would be finalized on the basis of the bidding / negotiation process. The original plan was to have a global tender with two submarines built in a foreign shipyard and the rest in India. Now all six submarines will be built in a single Indian shipyard within the country under the “Make in India” category with foreign collaboration. It is estimated that the entire project is likely to be around Rs 50,000 crores.
