India has proposed Japan to build six stealth submarines in India, worth over Rs 50,000 crore. The India has forwarded a proposal to Tokyo for making its latest diesel-electric Soryu-class submarines in India. If agreed, the Japan will have to form a joint venture with an Indian public/private shipyard and ships are to be built at an Indian shipyard. The tender or RFP (request for proposal) for the same is likely to be issued to the shipyards this year. The six new submarines will have both land-attack missile capabilities and air-independent propulsion for greater underwater endurance.
