India’s Adani Group, whose businesses span logistics, power generation, coal mining and gas distribution, is planning to foray in defence and aerospace production. At present, the company is in talks with various global defence companies for a strategic partnership for manufacturing a range of defence equipment. It has been pitching its main asset — the country's largest private port and SEZ at Mundra in Gujarat — with its sea and land linkages as a possible manufacturing location. Among the companies that are being explored for tie-ups include Sweden’s SAAB, Italy's Finmeccanica, US based Textron and BAE Systems. The group, in April 2015, has also applied to the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) for a licence to manufacture helicopters under a new entity, Adani Defence Systems & Technologies Ltd that was registered in March this year.
