Defence Ministry under the 'Make in India' scheme has given in-principle approval for manufacture of specialist ammunition to private industry for the army. The note is being processed for the approval from CCS and Defence Ministry will take up the case with the Home Ministry and the Ministry for Chemical and Fertilizers to grant licenses for manufacture of ammunition in the private sector. The Indian Army has decided on seven types of ammunition for procurement from private suppliers. This includes specialist ammunition for T-72 tanks and Bofors artillery guns, GRAD BM-21 charges and electronic fuses. The annual cost of this procurement is expected to be in the range of Rs 800 Crores.
