Naval Utility Helicopters (NUH)

Rs 21000 Crores project for 111 Naval Utility Helicopters under the Strategic Partnership had invited Indian Private Sector companies for participation. However, HAL has put in two bids for the project – one through the parent PSU and another through its joint venture company with Russian Helicopters, despite the clear guidelines only private sector companies for the bid.

The foreign helicopters manufacturers are participating in the competition in partnership with Indian firms. These include:

  • Airbus with Mahindra Defence offered two separate choppers
  • Sikorsky Lockheed Martin Group had formed up an alliance with Tata Aerospace and Defence
  • Kamov, offering its KA 226 chopper a JV with HAL

Indian players who have applied for Shortlisting for the mega project include Adani Defence, Reliance Defence Bharat Forge and Laxmi Machine Works that are yet to tie up with a foreign manufacturer.
